Choosing Your Theme for the Year: Why It Matters
Every year, I choose a theme. It’s a simple practice, but one of the most powerful tools I use to focus my energy, guide my decisions, and shape my mindset for the months ahead. Have you ever tried this exercise? If so, can you remember what your previous themes were?
Choosing a theme is more than just a motivational phrase or a vague resolution. It’s a lens through which you view your year – a guiding star that helps you navigate challenges and seize opportunities. Unlike resolutions that often fade by February, a theme gives you an ongoing intention – something to return to daily, whenever you need a compass.
As we look toward 2026, I invite you to ask yourself: What theme is calling to you? What words or ideas spark a feeling deep inside? My theme for 2026 is Going with the Flow. The intent is to embrace life without fighting its current.
This theme resonates deeply as I enter my fourth year in Prescott. When I first moved here, I wasn’t sure I would stay. I rented a place locally while keeping tenants in my San Diego home – sort of testing the waters. Now, having recently sold my San Diego house and bought my own home here, I’ve fully committed. Prescott is no longer a “maybe” – it’s home.
And feeling at home is so much more than owning a house. It’s about belonging. I love my friends, the rhythm of this town, the changing seasons, and sharing all of it with my mom and her husband who live nearby. My life feels full and rich with family, friends, and meaningful community work.
There’s a deep satisfaction in knowing you’re connected to a place and the people in it – that sense of rootedness you can’t put a price on. And while love isn’t center stage for me right now, I remain open. When Mr. Next presents himself – smart, fit, and in his 60s – I’ll happily add that joy to the mix.
Looking ahead to the new year, my overriding feeling is gratitude. Gratitude for the home I’ve created, the community that welcomes me, and the opportunities to grow and contribute. Choosing Going with the flow is a gentle reminder to stay present, accept what comes, and stop fighting currents I can’t control.
So why is choosing a theme so powerful? First, it helps you focus. Life throws distractions and decisions your way, but a theme gives you a filter to ask, “Does this support my intention for the year?” If the answer is no, it’s easier to let it go.
Second, a theme encourages flexibility and resilience. Life doesn’t always go as planned. Having a theme like mine, about flowing instead of fighting, helps me embrace change with less stress and more curiosity.
Third, a theme can bring clarity and motivation when you need it most. On days when it’s hard to get started or when doubt creeps in, your theme can spark your energy and keep you moving forward.
Have you ever tried this? Think back – what themes have you chosen in past years? How did they influence your life? If you haven’t yet, it’s never too late to start. Begin with a few quiet moments of reflection. Ask yourself: What do I want to invite more of in my life this year? What do I want to release? What feeling or mindset do I want to carry with me?
Write down words or short phrases that resonate. Play with them. See what sticks. When one theme rises above the rest, keep it close. Put it where you’ll see it often – on your bathroom mirror, phone wallpaper, or in your journal.
Then let that theme gently shape your decisions, actions, and mindset. Over time, it will become part of your story – guiding you in ways big and small. This practice isn’t about perfection or achieving a checklist. It’s about living intentionally and giving yourself permission to grow in a way that feels meaningful.
So, as you prepare for 2026, I challenge you: choose your theme. Make it your personal mantra for the year. Let it remind you daily of what matters most.
Here’s to a year filled with focus, flow, and fulfillment – may your theme light the path to your best year yet.
