No matter where you are on your journey to building your Direct Selling organization, it can be challenging to get a clear picture of yourself as an effective leader.
I work with many Consultants who are dedicated to building a large and successful organization, and I hear one consistent comment around Leadership.
Usually the first thing they say is “I want to be a strong leader! I really do!”
And then they list out where they show up as leaders in their daily life: “I know that I show up as a capable leader in my job,” “… in my family,” “…in my church,” or “… in my community.” Yet they inevitably feel frustrated in their ability to be a leader in their business. “If only I could get a team, I know I’d be a great leader!”
So what’s missing? Usually it’s that your experience so far has been with leading people who have already been collected into a group and want (and expect) to be led. They are often happy to have you show up to lead them! But it’s different with your Direct Selling business.
The challenge is that your team doesn’t even know who they are yet! The benefit is that you get to enjoy building your team from scratch by ATTRACTING like-minded people to your business. Think of that! You get to invite the people you want to work with and build the team culture and success you desire.
Develop Your Attracting Attitude
Many emerging leaders have no awareness of the power of an attracting attitude. They believe their ability to effectively lead will come from developing more skills.
This is a common blind spot for Consultants who wish a team would just show up. The challenge is not in your leadership skills, it’s in your willingness to do what it takes to attract a team. In other words, your leadership attitude!
What if you were able to see things differently? What if in reality you discovered that, rather than skill, the most important aspect to effective leadership is attitude?
Your skill can be developed over time. Your attitude can be adjusted in one moment of clarity!
Throughout history, when we look to the men and women who are considered ‘great leaders,’ we discover they share many common characteristics. When viewed through the lens of leadership, it becomes clear that rather than skill, attitude is the fine print to authentic leadership.
Thought leader Brian Tracy sums it up succinctly when he says, “Your attitude is an expression of your values, beliefs and expectations.”
What are your expectations for your business? Are you with a company that sparks your dreams for a new life? Do you have a product or service that you believe can truly make a difference in people’s lives? Has your business model and pay plan created financial abundance for those leaders who walked the path ahead of you?
With the right attitude and commitment to action, you can follow their lead and move in the direction of your dreams.
