As you sponsor new business partners, keep in mind that many people who join your team will not have prior experience in being an entrepreneur or running their own business.

Even with effective training and support provided by your company, Sponsor and upline leaders, for many, it’s not a lack of support that keeps them from getting off to a fast start … but their mentality.

You’ve most likely heard the phrase:

“If you treat it like a hobby, it will pay you like a hobby.  If you treat it like a business, it will pay you like a business.”

Intellectually, I imagine most people understand this point.

And before we go any further, let’s all agree that your Direct Selling business can be whatever you want it to be.

If you ARE looking for a hobby, and just want to earn a little extra money, get your products paid for, share your products or service with some friends and family, then YAY for you!  That’s exactly what you can do.  Isn’t that marvelous?!

But … if you’re looking to create substantial part-time income, then you need to take a different approach.

Perhaps you are a Consultant who is NOT satisfied with the pace of your business, yet can’t seem to pinpoint where you must make a shift in perspective, attitude or activity.

If that’s where you find yourself, then let’s figure this out.  To begin, I’d like you to consider if you are “treating your business like a business or a hobby?”  Hmm.

Do you want to know for sure?  Then let’s look at some key indicators that reflect what I call a ‘hobby mentality.’  As you review this list … consider how you would categorize your own efforts.

When working with a ‘hobby mentality:’

  • You don’t schedule your hours of operation
  • You don’t set goals
  • You dabble or work only when it’s fun, easy and comfortable
  • You do the easy stuff first
  • You don’t commit emotionally

Conversely, when working with a “business mentality:’

  • You schedule your hours of operation every week – and stick to them
  • You work with your Sponsor or upline mentor
  • You set goals in support of your title, organizational volume, sponsoring, new customers and income
  • You find the courage to take action that stretches you or take you out of your comfort zone
  • You do the income producing activities first – the ones that have the biggest effect on your bottom line
  • You are 100% emotionally committed to achieving your dreams

Remember, you don’t need 40 hours a week to be wildly successful in this profession.  It’s what you accomplish successfully in the hours you do have!

And it’s your vision, your commitment, your courage, and your willingness to take consistent action that is the hallmark of a business mentality!

Having a hobby is fun. Having a high income business is fun, too – and radically empowering!

If you want a hobby, go get one!  Have fun dabbling with direct selling … or sing, dance, craft, travel, play an instrument or ride a horse.

But if you want to live up to your unlimited potential – and that of your Direct Selling business – then find the joy when working and harness a ‘business mentality.’

Don’t treat your business like a hobby.  Don’t confuse the two.  There is simply too much at stake!  And your time is now!
