To be great, you must believe in yourself.
Build a Better Belief System and Watch Yourself Grow Immensely
The Fear That’s Killing Positive Beliefs
Why do people lack a strong belief in themselves? The answer is the fear of success.
On the surface, this type of fear may seem crazy. In reality, it’s a fear many experience and sometimes overlook.
What could possibly be so scary about success? Plenty!
How does this manifest in our business? We come up with excuses and convenient rationalizations:
- “I don’t have time for this.”
- “This isn’t a fit for me.”
- “What was I thinking when I started this?”
- “There’s no way I can deliver.”
- “This isn’t me.”
These are some of the limiting thoughts that go on in the mind of someone with the fear of success. These then translate to self-limiting beliefs.
It All Starts with Poor Judgment
Where do the fear of success and negative belief come from? Perhaps when you were younger, you said the following:
- “I’m going to make the lead in the play!”
- “I’m going to win first prize in the science fair!”
- “I’m going to sell more Girl Scout cookies than anyone!”
Then the person or even the society who heard that might have expressed a negative opinion or reaction:
- “No, you’re not!”
- “You don’t have what it takes.”
- “No one in our family did something like that.”
- “What makes you think you’re better than everyone else?”
- “Don’t get too big for your britches!”
Stop the Tape and Change Your Belief
Your young mind then took in that limiting belief and started playing a mental tape. It’s one full of “I’m not good enough. Not me. Not in my family. What makes me think I can do that?” that keeps playing over and over again.
The negative thoughts around what you deserve, self-worth, and possibilities are now on auto-play. It plays every time you think about doing something great. When you’re reaching, striving, and dreaming, you use these thoughts as a reason to stop. Depending on how old you are, this tape is in an endless loop for a long time.
Well, you know what, you can stop that tape and record over it. With awareness and practice, you can create a new message of strong belief, courage, and commitment. You can develop the faith that you deserve a good life and truly believe you are special in your own way.
What are some of the negative perceptions people have about you? What are you doing to have a better belief system? Share your thoughts below!
