One of my favorite things to do is spend an evening at the symphony.  I get completely swept away in the beauty and magic of the music.

As I watch the synergy between the conductor and the orchestra, it always brings to mind an interesting leadership dynamic that correlates so closely to our profession.   Let’s take a few minutes and enjoy the symphony of Direct Sales.

To begin … it starts with the composer of the music. In our profession, the composer is your company.   With the development of their unique business system, they write the score; the recognizable themes and chord structures.  This score, this ‘system’, is then played by the musicians of the orchestra.

They know the importance of following the score.  You just don’t re-invent the wheel when you play in the symphony.   And yet as individuals, they bring their unique instrument, voice and tone to the performance.

In our profession, each Consultant follows their company’s proven system, while at the same time they bring their unique personality, vision and leadership style to the team.

And then there’s the Conductor, who leads the orchestra and brings all the individuals together to create the ultimate experience for everyone.

As a Sponsor and upline leader, you tailor the score to the ‘instruments’ in your own orchestra.

Yes, you keep to the ‘system’.  And yet, as a leader, you create a culture on your team that allows for duplication of both system and individual style.

For example, the Conductor can arrange a violin duet for mandolins.  He can arrange a rock and roll anthem for a children’s choir.  She can arrange a classic piece by Mozart into a hip-hop composition.  You still recognize the song, but it may sound very different.

Legendary saxophonist Charlie Parker said,

“Music is your own experience, your own thoughts, your own wisdom.  If you don’t live it, it won’t come out of your horn.  They teach you there’s a boundary line to music.  But, man, there’s no boundary line to art.”

As you mature as a leader, you too will become a masterful conductor and arranger yourself.  You will gather your own musicians and play your own interpretation of the score.  And this will lead to the sounds of beautiful music we call high achievement.

“There’s no boundary line to art,” my friend.  It’s time to let your music out!
